Wildebeest Migration in Masai Mara Wonder of the world
Every year, the great wildebeest migration in Masai mara game reserve takes place in summer months. Running through 3,000km of savannah and rivers, the wildebeests run through all hurdles and dangers to reach the green grass. The start of the migration is around April when the grass in Serengeti starts to dry out and the new calves from the February calving season are born and ready to move.

By May the herds from Ngorongoro are joining up with the Serengeti herds in small groups and ultimately forming the mega herds. The onset of the rains up north in the Mau hills in Kenya is marked by lightning and thunder which signals the mega herds to start moving north towards the Masai mara. By now the exodus in full gear and the herds can be seen from space as a black moving mass in the plains.
Come June and July and the front end herds start to arrive at Sandriver area and near the cottars 1961 camp. The herds are soon joined by the Loita plains herds to continue up northwards. All the while the young green grass shoots have blossomed turning the Masai Mara plains from the usual yellow colour to a deep lush green color. The wildebeests spread across the plains as they mow the grass like living lawn mowers.
By August, the wildebeest migration has reached the Mara river and the river crossing stampede is in full gear. The blue wildebeests can be seen for full days as they cross the river in herds of thousands at a time. The action here is a mad rush to beat the raging currents, the 18ft Nile crocodiles and the lions, cheetahs, hyenas and leopards waiting on the opposite bank for the arrival of their annual feast.
By the end of October the herds are now returning back westwards in to Serengeti. The Loita wildebeest herds will return directly south to their residence grounds in the Loita plains of Masai Mara while the larger herds go back to Serengeti and Ngorongoro plains for another calving season in February and March. This completes the cyclic wildebeest migration route/ map that these animals take every year following the rains and the promise of fresh green grass.
