Wildebeest Migration Best Month
The best month to go for wildebeest migration in Masai mara Kenia is from July to October when its at full throttle. The wildebeest starts in Ngorongoro and Serengeti plains in Tanzania. The months of February and March are calving season when over quarter of a million calves are born. The calving is planned to coincide with the rains to ensure high survival rates of the calves.
The hyenas and other big cat predators however, have different ideas in mind as they hunt the new born calves in great numbers. This helps keep the wildebeest numbers in check. The herds start to congregate in the months of April when the Ngorongoro herds start moving north to join the Serengeti herds initially in small scattered herds which gradually form into massive herds.
By May the herds are in thousands of numbers and the grand march north starts in earnest crossing the Seronera area approaching the sand river border area. By July, the Loita herds also start moving northwards and join the larger herds inside Masai mara for the trek north driven by the fresh grass in the plains.
Between July and October, the wildebeest migration is making a northward exodus which later turns south westwards back into the northern Serengeti areas. By now the grass is dry and the herds scatter back to their respective areas of Serengeti, south Masai mara and Ngorongoro.
Since Masai mara offers the best opportunity to see the mega herds when they have finally all congregated, the best time to see this is when the wildebeests are inside Kenya between the months of July, August, September and October. It’s is also during the months of August and September when the herds are making the spectacular mara river crossing.
