8 Days: Eight (8) Days Samburu, Aberdare, Nakuru, Masai Mara Lodge or camping safari tours are offered as private or group joining in packages from Nairobi hotels. The tour starts from Nairobi direct to Samburu national reserve passing the equator at Nanyuki. This is one of the great tours for family vacation in Kenya for game drive, game viewing, bird watching, walking safaris, balloon safaris, night game drives, photographic safari and mountain viewing.
Day 1 of 8 Days Nairobi Safaris -Samburu National Reserve
Having spent a night in Nairobi to relax after the long flight into Kenya, the following morning our driver guide will pick you up from your hotel after breakfast to start your Kenyan safari. You will drive through the lush green central Kenya highlands passing some of the most scenic tea and coffee plantations. As you climb, you will experience weather changes from Nairobi and through the equator. At Nanyuki, you can see Mt Kenya peaks on your right side.
A scheduled stop at the equator will let you know you are standing at the centre of the earth’s two hemispheres. You start to drop into the northern Kenya and the green landscape suddenly turns into a dry semi arid shrubs and flat plains with scattered short stubby trees. The road is paved all the way and the ride is smooth.
The Ewaso Ngiro river divides this dry shrubby landscape snaking its way through the patched sandy earth with its characteristic green riverine forest of Doum palms, fronds and reeds. The river is the lifeline of Samburu ecosystem and all animals must come to the river atleast once in a day to quench its thirst in this rather hot and dry area.
You will drive into Samburu national reserve and check into any of these lodges Sopa Samburu, Samburu lodge, Sentrim Samburu, Sopa Samburu lodge or AA lodge, Ashnil lodge among others. If on a budget you have Umoja camping site, riverside camping site and the Ewaso ngiro river public campsite. Dinner and overnight in your lodge, tented camp or campsite.

On the next two days, you will be doing game drives in the Samburu national reserve. Game drives in Samburu are unique in that you only go to the river Ewaso Ngiro and wait for the animals to come to the river to drink as they must. You can spend a whole day at various points on the river Ewaso Ngiro watching all sorts of animals as they come to drink water.
The animals in Samburu and to the north of the equator are usually larger than those in the south and are unique to this area including the wide eared and horse like Grevy Zebra, the giraffe like gerenuk antelope, the long horned Beisa Oryx, the blue necked Somali ostrich and the very colourful map skinned. The animals in Samburu are very interesting to watch with their distinct shapes and sizes.
The game drives on day 2 are usually done in both Samburu national reserve and the Shaba national park. The Shaba national park has some of the most unique and dramatic landscapes with Ewaso Ngiro cutting shapes and rocks into some beautiful sceneries. The terrain is a land of contrasts scattered with blue-mountains forming a back drop of flat dry and patched earth which is then cut across by a snaking green belt of the Ewaso Ngiro.

Masai mara is a 1510sqkm area that is home to more than 3 million animals which gives it the highest concentration of antelopes, browsers and predators in the whole of Africa. The best game drive destination in Africa is the Masai mara game reserve. The plains are wide open spaces with undulating savannah grassland and uninterrupted by forests. You will see wildlife as far as the eye can see.
The Masai mara is also home to the world’s greatest migration of animals with more than 2 million wildebeests, zebras and gazelles crossing over 3,000km of a circular route from Serengeti in Tanzania into Masai mara Kenya in search of fresh pasture as they follow the rains. The Masai mara great wildebeest migration is one of the most spectacular events in the months of July to October every year.
Tourists flock the Masai mara to watch the most dramatic wildebeest river crossing stampede at the already flooded mara river. The animals amass here by their thousands and in different locations on the river and when one jumps in, it becomes a mad rush for everyone to beat the crocodiles to the opposite bank.
Enjoy an evening game drive and return to lodge or camp for dinner and overnight with lots of stories over the campfire.
Day 7 of 8 Days Masai Mara Safari Tour
This day will be a full day of game drive in Masai mara with a picnic lunch at the river. It is the day that you will drive to the mara river to see the spectacular mara river crossing animal stampede. You will get to see live what you have always watched on Nat Geo. You will depart your camp or lodge and go to the mara river to watch the river crossing.
The wildebeests will gather on the opposite bank in their thousands but none wants to make the dive into the raging torrents of the flooded mara river. Pretty soon, the front flanks can hold the pressure from the rear wildebeests that keep on arriving and pushing from the back. It takes only one animal to make the mad jump into the water and what follows is chaos and mad rash for the opposite bank.
All of a sudden, every wildebeest and zebra wants to be the first to get to the opposite bank and escape the raging floods and the crocodiles in the water. Even the crocodiles are cautious and keep to the flanks to avoid being trampled on.
They will grab the occasional straggler at the edges of the file and have a snack before the main course. It’s not the crocodiles attacks that cause the most casualties at the river crossing but by the mere stampeding by the wildebeests which leaves some with broken limbs, spines and many drown from the whole mess. At the end of the crossing, tens of thousands wildebeests will be dead in the water and this is when the crocodiles have a feast of the year for weeks on end. Ohh but the stench!!!
Enjoy a picnic lunch in one of the picnic sites and later do a further game drive in the game reserve and return to the camp by evening in time for dinner and overnight. The stories at the bonfire are vivid this day. Dinner and overnight at the Masai mara lodge or camping site.
Day 8 of 8 Days Kenya Safari Tours – Masai Mara - Nairobi
The Masai mara yellow sun rays warms up the plains and it’s yet another day to discover what treasures are hidden in these aptly named “spotted plains”. The sun heats up the cool morning air and dries the dew on the grass as the birds chatter away and the lion roars sound even closer than the previous night. You will enjoy a hot breakfast and go on a morning game drive in the park.
Your motive for the day is to find the elusive animals that you may not have seen for the three days and 2 nights you have been in Masai mara. Look out for the leopards, black rhinos and other rare treats. This is your last game drive in Masai mara and you want to make it count by seeing as much as you can before departure.
Return to the Masai mara lodge or camp and check out departing for Nairobi at 10:00am with an enroute lunch. You will arrive in Nairobi late afternoon and drop off at your hotel.
This marks the end of an amazing 8 days of safari that has taken you through the arid north, the mountainous central, the wildlife viewing in the south of Kenya and the birds and of the Great Rift Valley lakes.
What is the Best Time to go and visit Masai Mara
Every day is great at the Masai mara since the animals are always here and the only migrating herds are the wildebeests of Serengeti that come and go. There are always the resident wildebeests that can be seen on any other day. Masai mara is very amazing all year round but there are some months that are more conducive to game drives than others due to the better weather conditions.
January to Mid March is a great time to go to Masai Mara and see the animals there since its summer months in Kenya.
April to June is wet season with heavy rains and game drives may be challenging due to wet park roads and sometimes you will get stuck. The up side with going to Masai mara during rainy season is that the prices are rock bottom and you can really get bargain prices for the most luxurious lodges and camps as this is a very low season for them.
July to mid October is the best time to visit Masai mara since it is the great wildebeest migration season and it corresponds with the summer season in Europe and North America. Most people are taking their summer vacations during summer and they want to see the wildebeest migration in Kenya as a family. This is by far the best time to come to Masai mara to see this world renowned spectacle.
November through December is a slow season but still a good time to tour Masai mara. There are lighter rains in this season which are not as disruptive as the long and heavier rains of April and May. The prices in October and November are also lower and there are less people.
This is the best time to avoid the crowds in Masai mara and have private and quiet game drives. The rains are intermittent and you can have a full week or two of clear skies which also makes for great pictures due to the green grass and cooler weather.
